Periodic Driver CPC Training
(Certificate of Professional Competence)
Keeping your HGV or PCV licence has changed. The Driver CPC (Certificate of Professional Competence) qualification is now required if you want to drive an HGVor PCV professionally.
Driver CPC applies to categories:
- C1, C and C+E for HGV and
- D1, D1+E, D, D+E licences for PCV.
The Driver CPC course has 3 main objectives, these are:
- Improve road safety
- Underpin and expand on current driver knowledge e.g. driver hours, digital tachographs etc.
- Ensure new entrants have the required skills and knowledge to carry out their duties as professional drivers.
PCV
- All drivers who have PCV entitlement and drive professionally must complete 35 hours formal training every 5 years.
- All Drivers requiring CPC must have their first 35 hours completed before September 2013
This applies to category D1, D1+E, D, D+E.
This means you must undergo formal Driver training on an on-going basis.
Once you have completed your 35 hours you will be issued with a DCPC qualification card. You must be carry your card at all times while driving professionally.
Ultimately, it is the driver’s responsibility to decide if this directive is applicable to them but we can advise fully in this regard. Just contact us and we will advise you about what is required and the timescales.
How you complete the 35 hours is up to you, as long as you complete at least 7 hours consecutively and the course is Driver CPC approved. Our Driver CPC courses are 7 hours in duration. We suggest completing one day (7 hours) every year – spreading the cost and time.
If you regularly transport passengers why not send your drivers on a one day HSE approved course and they will be credited for 7 hours CPC and hold a recognised HSE first aid certificate enabling them to act professionally until the emergency services arrive.
